Ya eran conocidas por los fenicios hace tres mil a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pueblos anteriores, como el egipcio, ya las utilizaron en rituales funerarios y religiosos. Tambi\u00e9n se cre\u00eda que eran instrumentos m\u00e1gicos que proteg\u00edan a los seres humanos de los malos esp\u00edritus durante el nacimiento.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gracias al comercio, se expandieron por los pa\u00edses del Mediterr\u00e1neo. Espa\u00f1a es el pa\u00eds que mejor ha conservado el instrumento, convirti\u00e9ndolo as\u00ed en uno de los instrumentos musicales nacionales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De forma tradicional, la casta\u00f1uela se sujeta al pulgar con el cord\u00f3n que une sus dos mitades, que quedan suspendidas entre la palma de la mano y los dedos.
